Shaping Futures: Byron Youth Service’s Barber Shop Program

Have you ever considered the power of a haircut?

For at-risk young men in Byron Bay, a new program is using barbershops as a springboard to a brighter future. Today, we are turning the spotlight on Byron Youth Service Inc. (BYS), a remarkable organisation offering hope and opportunity to young people in need.

BYS is a beacon of support for Byron Shire’s youth, providing essential services and activities for young people aged 12-24. Their mission is to empower young people to navigate towards successful and fulfilling lives.

BYS tackles the critical issue of youth engagement. They reach out to young men who are at-risk of dropping out of school, exhibiting antisocial behaviours, or entering the criminal justice system. These young people often face a challenging combination of factors, including poverty, family dysfunction, and a lack of positive role models.

The Barbershop Program is a unique and impactful initiative. It provides a safe and supportive environment where young men can learn valuable barbering skills. But the program goes beyond haircuts. It equips participants with financial literacy, life skills, communication skills, and self-care practices. They also build positive relationships with mentors and role models, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.

With the support of BYS, these young men are gaining the skills and confidence they need to turn their lives around.

Future2’s grant will directly support the Barbershop Program, allowing BYS to empower 20 young men with the tools they need to succeed.
