Empowering Change: A Spotlight on Athenie’s Angels

FUTURE2 2023 GRANT RECIPIENT

Imagine yourself at 18, facing the world with a hopeful heart but lacking the tools to navigate the complexities of adulthood.

Mental health challenges can add another layer of difficulty, leaving young people feeling lost and unsure where to turn.

Athenie’s Angels understands this vulnerability.

They are a Melbourne-based mental health promotion charity dedicated to supporting young adults facing challenges that could lead to homelessness, unemployment, and social isolation.

They aim to empower these young people with the knowledge, skills, and support they need to build a brighter future.

Driven by a personal tragedy – the loss of their daughter to suicide during Covid lockdowns – Athenie’s Angels confronts the critical issue of mental health challenges faced by young adults in Melbourne. The founders themselves grapple with the question: what tools could they have given their daughter to navigate those darkest moments?

This question reflects a harsh reality. Many young adults struggle with mental health challenges, often feeling lost and alone. They lack the resources and understanding to effectively navigate these complexities, which can lead to a downward spiral of negative consequences.

Athenie’s Angels believe that “we aren’t born with a handbook on how to manage life stresses.” Despite growing awareness about anxiety and depression, there’s a critical gap in practical skills for navigating challenges.

This approach aligns perfectly with the founders’ desire to equip young people with the tools they need. Their program brings young adults together with qualified professionals to teach them skills on how to cope with mental stress, navigate the emotional rollercoasters of life, and build resilience.

By providing these tools, Athenie’s Angels hopes to empower young people to support themselves and each other, ultimately preventing tragedies and building a brighter future.

Athenie’s Angels’ core program is the Resiliency Building Program. This program brings young people together with qualified health professionals to learn essential life skills.

The program focuses on:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Techniques (CBT): Participants will learn and practice techniques like gratitude journaling, optimism exercises, meditation, yoga, breathwork, and mindfulness.
  • Stress Management: The program will provide psychoeducation on stress, its impact, and various stress management techniques.
  • Strengths Identification and Development: These activities will help young people identify and enhance their individual strengths while building emotional intelligence.
  • Self-Care and Wellness: The program promotes well-being through practices that address physical, mental, and emotional needs.
  • Building Supportive Networks: Participants will explore strategies for joining social groups and actively participating in their communities.
  • Continuous Learning and Growth: The program incorporates feedback from participants about their experiences and learnings, allowing for ongoing evaluation and improvement.

This program can significantly improve their mental health and overall well-being.

The grant funds will allow them to serve an additional 20 young people in the coming year. By expanding its program, Athenie’s Angels anticipates empowering an additional 20 young adults with the skills and confidence they need to navigate challenges and build a fulfilling life.
